ATTENTION HYUNDAI AND KIA SALESFORCES
“South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia Motors missed their global sales targets in 2015 for the first time since the financial crisis. The carmakers, which together are the world's fifth largest automakers by sales, sold 8.01 million vehicles, below their forecast of 8.2 million. They expect sales to rise 1.5% in 2016, following a flat performance last year. Both brands have faced stiff competition in recent years.
On the other hand, Japan’s Subaru projects another year of record U.S. sales -- its eighth straight year of records and its ninth year of increases. Since 2011, Subaru has notched double-digit sales growth every year, with increases above 20 percent in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Sales climbed 13 percent in 2015. Subaru is busy ramping up capacity for 2016” (source: BBC News, January 2016)
Could Subaru’s impressive growth in sales have anything to do with one of its major platforms….??? “Dogs. It’s What Makes a Subaru Commercial, a Subaru Commercial”
According to Adweek, the stereotype of Subaru drivers as dog owners is backed up by the data. Over half of Subaru drivers own dogs, and dog ownership among Subaru drivers has grown by 49 percent between 2008 and 2013. Instead of ignoring its stereotypes like most companies would, Subaru embraced them — well, one of them — and made it into the wildly successful campaign, “Dog Tested Dog Approved.” Their latest installment for the campaign debuted during the 2016 Super Bowl with the 30-second spot, “Puppy.” “Since we introduced the lovable Barkleys to the world, consumers have been patiently waiting for the next round of creative to see where their journey would take them next,” Subaru of America VP of marketing Alan Bethke told Adweek. “Dogs make us look — one of the chief jobs of every ad is to capture the attention of the target audience,” says Kim Gordon from The Entrepreneur. “Consumers are exposed to thousands of ads every day and are multitasking now more than ever before. Each ad needs to rise above the noise.” She continues, saying that dogs engage our emotions. “The recession has changed the way we shop, as consumers scrutinize product and company information more thoroughly. [But] we trust man’s best friend.” Subaru believes in making the world a better place. Over the past 20 years, they've donated more than 50 million dollars to causes we all care about, and their employees have logged more than 28,000 volunteer hours. They created the Subaru Love Promise - a pledge to do right by the communities in which we all live and work. Subaru Loves Pets - whether they live in our homes or in the wild, Subaru is committed to keeping all animals safe and healthy.
Contrast this with South Korea – a country that purposefully tortures, slaughters and eats 2.5 million dogs and cats annually. One cannot stress enough the PURPOSEFUL TORTURE associated with the dog and cat meat trade all over Asia - the vast majority of these dogs are either stolen from owners or bred into this practice and their living conditions are beyond deplorable - then the preparation for slaughter begins - most are hung & beaten, limbs amputated, electrocuted, blow-torched and burned, boiled and skinned ALIVE - all for the "belief" that FEAR increases the animals’ adrenaline and hormones, which in turn make the meat tastier, make men more virile, has "health benefits," etc. This practice of tenderizing the meat via outright torture can go on for days. Most puppies are slaughtered before 1 year of age because of the belief that the younger the dog the tastier the meat. Cats are boiled alive and made into “health tonics.” I know this is heart-breaking for many to hear but most people are completely unaware of this and it can only stop through awareness and public education and outcry – THIS IS NOT ABOUT STOPPING MEAT CONSUMPTION – AND we recognize conditions are deplorable in OUR OWN major factory farming slaughterhouses in the US, and this kind of cruelty needs to be stopped as well - but on the whole, we have laws where these countries do not, and we do not PURPOSELY PRACTICE PROLONGED TORTURE OF ANIMALS – THIS PREMISE IS NOT BUILT INTO THE US MEAT INDUSTRY. Watch the undercover videos coming out of Korea, China, Vietnam and Indonesia – it is there to see for anyone who doubts this exists. IT IS ALSO NOT ABOUT CULTURE – “culture” will never excuse torture. Asian people are not torturing dogs & cats because they are starving – quite the opposite in fact. People in these countries also do this in front of children and teach their children how to torture. And as far as helping dogs and cats in our own US shelters, of course we need to do more of this as well- but you cannot compare life in a US shelter or humane euthanasia to prolonged agony and torture.
It needs to be noted though that many Asian people, especially the younger generations, do not eat dogs/cats and do not condone this practice!! The hope is that with enough pressure both outside and inside these countries, this will eventually stop – but it needs to end NOW.
OF COURSE WE ACKNOWLEDGE THAT HYUNDAI AND KIA are not directly responsible for these actions of cruelty. But like it or not, the Korean automotive industry is becoming guilty by association if they do not TAKE A STAND AND PUT PRESSURE ON THE KOREAN GOVERNMENT TO STOP THIS. This is not a foolish notion, the automotive industry in Korea is extremely well connected and well equipped to change the tides within government
There is an incredibly strong social media movement that is growing everyday and will not remain silent. We are forced to demand BOYCOTTS OF ALL KOREAN PRODUCTS in order to enact change.
Subaru is a company that got the message and the intent right
