It is the dream that haunts me. The way the dying, the way it never leaves that part of your body.
It has been three weeks since my return. And when I look at who we are, it feels like nothing has been accomplished. All that death. All the moments I stood there, cut with blade into the wrist.
I am not well. And in the end if the work we did accomplishes nothing. Then who was it for, and what did my suffering bring for them.
I have been wondering, contemplating if I should post the video we played for Congress. Do people really need to see it? Is this what is needed to bring about the end.
I have never posted torture before. Never felt it was right for the human mind to see. I had never understood, before the first beating, what exactly the dog meat trade was. The severity of it. The inhumanity.
I always tell people, that you have to see it to believe it. The ugliness. The way human beings spill blood, but never feel conviction.
The footage we have gathered, I have been saving it for the government. So in that moment when the time comes, so they could see what I see. So they can cry. So they can crumble into the ground. So with their hearts, who they are would die.
In the moments when I close my eyes, I picture the government before me. But maybe, this is what it takes so you could understand, who I am. And why we wish to die for them.
Darkness. Before you criticize the movement, take a look inside the darkness - and tell me how the fuck to breathe.

16th Sep 2016 - Hastings Hosts Briefing Condemning Yulin Dog Meat Festival

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings

Press Releases

Briefing focuses on Hastings’ H.Res.752, Condemning the Dog Meat Festival in Yulin, China, and urging China to end the dog meat trade, and the global dog meat trade [photos for print below]

(Fort Lauderdale, FL) Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement after hosting a Congressional Briefing on the Yulin Dog Meat Festival on September 14, 2016. During the festival, which has been condemned worldwide, approximately ten thousand dogs are rounded up and slaughtered for human consumption.

Joining Hastings as Panelists at the briefing were: Lisa Vanderpump, Founder of The Vanderpump Dog Foundation, Dr. John Sessa, Executive Director, The Vanderpump Dog Foundation, Dr. Peter Li, China Policy Advisor at Humane Society International and Associate Professor at East Asian Politics of the University of Houston-Downton, Andrea Gung, Executive Director and Founder of Duo Duo - Compassion Beyond Borders, Marc Ching, Founder of the Animal Hope & Wellness Foundation, and Valarie Ianniello, Director of Operations, the Animal Hope & Wellness Foundation

“This briefing shined a light on horrific practices that take place across Asia. The Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China is just one of many where dogs are inhumanely slaughtered for human consumption. That the animals are purposefully made to suffer before their brutal deaths, often through being skinned, boiled, or burned alive, makes the festival in Yulin particularly detesting,” said Congressman Alcee L. Hastings, who introduced legislation condemning the festival earlier this year. “I was pleased to host a distinguished panel of experts, many of whom have spent time in Yulin, for this important discussion. Our fight is not one culture against another, nor is it one government against another; rather, it is one for compassion and kindness as we demand that these brutal practices be stopped immediately.

“The beauty of this cause is that it is universal. It transcends party lines, state borders and political stances. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican or a Democrat; our cause should be everyone’s cause, said Lisa Vanderpump, Founder of The Vanderpump Dog Foundation. “As a country, we are judged by our actions and our beliefs. If we turn our heads and do nothing, we are condoning that this Festival continues. By not doing anything, we are silently giving Yulin our blessing. We, as people, should not stand passive while watching this barbaric practice continues.”

“With the might of the American government behind us, we can begin to put pressure on Chinese officials to enact changes in procedure and law enforcement. Many of the courses of action are not only already established within China, but only need regular monitoring and enforcing to be rendered effective,” said Dr. John Sessa, Executive Director of the Vanderpump Dog Foundation.

“China's dog meat trade is not simply an animal cruelty issue. It is an industry challenged by the Chinese people themselves for its connection with a host of practices that are against China's own laws. We are not here launching a war of culture on China. We are joining the Chinese people in condemning an industry and a ‘festival’ that run counter to China's progress. I believe China is materially and philosophically ready to legislate animal protection laws and to outlaw the dog meat trade,” said Dr. Peter Li, China Policy Advisor at Humane Society International and Associate Professor at East Asian Politics of the University of Houston-Downton. “China is the only top industrialized nation that does not have an anti-cruelty law. Dog meat consumption is not part of the mainstream Chinese food culture. Some 70 percent of the Chinese people have never eaten dog meat. The dog meat industry is so insignificant. Its outlaw won't adversely impact the Chinese economy or the life of the Chinese people. The Yulin Dog Meat Festival has done irreparable damage to China's reputation. It is an event that is patently offensive to the Chinese people. It does not belong in the 21st century. Congressman Hastings' leadership in the monumental Resolution opened a new page in US-China relations. International relations must include issues of the protection of nonhuman animals so that a truly harmonious inter-state relationship can be developed.”

“In my presentation, I spoke about hope being the only way forward,” said Andrea Gung, Founder of Duo Duo – Compassion without Borders. “To hear Congressman Hastings speak with such conviction about making H.Res.752 a joint resolution, I walked away knowing, hope is already underway in our nation's capital. Duo Duo Project is honored to have been given a voice in support of the resolution."

“We are grateful to have been a part of the panel discussing the Dog Meat Trade, the first of its kind on Capitol Hill,” said Marc Ching, Founder of the Animal Hope & Wellness Foundation and Valarie Ianniello, Director of Operations. “Congressman Hastings has provided us a platform to jump off of and we plan to keep the momentum going."
Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.

It seems the Republicans are lagging behind and not every Democrat is on board. We would love to see 218 co-sponsors; that would be an automatic pass from what I understand. We do need to get more Republicans to co-sponsor though so that Speaker Ryan can't stop this Resolution from making it to the floor for a vote. Let's get busy and contact them if you haven't done so yet. At the very least, please contact those Reps. in your district and State. So here again is Priority List #1 (Republican Representatives). We'll be alternating lists from Rep. to Dem. throughout the day.

PLEASE EVERYONE CONTACT REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVES SO THEY SUPPORT H.RES 752
This Resolution can make a huge impact on the cat and dog trade in Asia!

But it may be tabled if we don't have enough Republican support for it !!! Here are their Email adresses.

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Congressman ________,

I write to ask for your support of House Resolution 752 by condemning the cat and dog meat trade and supporting the movement to end it once and for all.

There is strong evidence that over 30 million cats and dogs each year are subjected to the most horrific cruelty imaginable prior to being slaughtered. Each one endures horrendous torture simply because of the (unfounded) belief, unquestionably passed from generation to generation, that tortured meat laidened with adrenaline will a) taste better (the meat being more tender); b) assist in making men virile (when in actual fact there have been outbreaks of Human Rabies, as a direct result of food safety issues within the dog meat trade, which ironically can leave men impotent. China has the second highest rate of Human Rabies, with Yulin (host of the yearly controversial dog meat festival) being in the ‘Top 10 Chinese cities’); c) the meat supposedly helps to keep the body cool during the summer months. And to the dog meat supporters, all those beliefs sickeningly ‘justify’ the torture that each animal endures: firstly in order to stop the animal running away their paws are either hacked off or their hocks are hacked into to sever the tendons, then the animal is beaten and either boiled alive, thrown into ‘hair removal machines’ (basically a rotating drum with a grated interior which scrapes the hair and flesh off the animal as it is spun around - most animals are still conscious during this process), hung by the neck and either agonisingly blowtorched to death or ripped apart. Sometimes the animal may endure all of those procedures. And this all takes place in plain sight of the other captive animals. Now, through scientific advancement research proves that animals are sentient beings - they feel a range of emotions and experience pain and fear, as do people. To knowingly allow animals to suffer this level of torturous abuse on a wide scale and on a regular basis is abhorrent. The abuse extends to farm animals in China also. It cannot continue - we cannot allow this to continue. At the very least, this brings shame on China! Worldwide media is beginning to show the reality of the cat and dog meat trade, people are being educated about the reality of it all and there is huge outcry against it - even in China itself. Animal activists from around the World are on the ground, working collaboratively, to rescue as many cats and dogs as possible - many of whom are pets that have been stolen from homes in order to meet the illegal demand for the trade. Volunteers from animal welfare groups are risking their lives to save the animals as they are met with anger and physical confrontation from the traders. It is becoming dangerous for all involved.

It is not only China that focuses on the trade, South Korea holds an equally controversial festival each year, known as ‘Bok Nal’ and is held around mid-July.

The truth of the huge scale of the cat and dog meat trade is now public knowledge - worldwide. It can no longer be hidden and ignored. Welfare laws are urgently needed to protect these sentient beings from enduring such levels of barbarity. As one of the most powerful global leaders China needs to update its views towards animals and act responsibly in ensuring welfare laws are put in place.

Please Sir, support the House Resolution 752 and begin the end of the evil trade.

Thank you for your time.

Kind regards,

DEAR ________________
WE AMERICANS are affected by this. WE AMERICANS are now subjected and bearing witness to the most heinous and malicious acts of terror, sadistic abuse and the most hateful of crimes. It is now in OUR HOMES across this beautiful country of ours. It is in OUR LIVING ROOMS, IT’S AROUND OUR DINNER TABLES, OUR OFFICES AND OUR SCHOOLS! My realistic fear is that OUR CHILDREN and future generations will become immune and desensitized to the torture of living beings with no consequences for the most inhumane actions. Children who bear witness to this cruelty are often traumatized or become desensitized to this gruesome activity. There are many studies that prove that there is a connection between animal abuse and crimes against humans. OUR CHILDREN and OUR IMPRESSIONABLE YOUNG ADULTS are seeing videos and images on OUR COMPUTERS on an hourly, daily and regular basis, bearing witness to these brutal, sadistic acts. This is on OUR SOIL and in OUR BACKYARD and OUR PLAYGROUNDS because computers have linked us together forever! This is no longer abroad – it is here! It is affecting American lives. WE Americans are in this pain and mental anguish which is directly affected by the abuse we are seeing to DOGS and CATS. WE cannot continue to bear witness -- to sit back and allow this to continue; to witness the most deliberate torture of innocent dogs and cats in Yulin China, S. Korea and elsewhere.

We are requesting your support for House Resolution 752 to end the brutalization of both dogs and cats in Yulin-China, S. Korea, Mexico, Philippines, Taiwan, as well as other countries.
More than 10 million dogs and cats are sadistically tortured and slaughtered each year many of which are stolen pets with collars still on. They are squeezed way too many to a cage and if they don’t fit, their legs are deliberately broken so they can get them to fit. They are transported hundreds to thousands of miles in cages so small they can hardly breathe. They are given NO food OR water during the trip to the slaughterhouses. Many don’t survive the trip. They are the lucky ones! When they are ready for slaughter they are tortured in the most barbaric, sadistic fashion in front of other dogs and cats while awaiting the same fate. They are nailed to a wall and then dismembered; boiled, skinned, and blow torched all while conscious and alive! There are way too many videos and photos on social media of this practice, and I think “how can this good country of ours allow this to continue?” These barbarians believe that the more the animal suffers the greater the benefit to their virility and the better the meat will taste. Obviously, there is no scientific evidence to support these misguided beliefs. In fact, eating dog meat has been connected to outbreaks of rabies and cholera. This is not a cultural practice as the festival dates back only to 2009 when dog meat traders wanted to help bring increased capital and tourism to Yulin. I saw a video of what looked to be a golden retriever puppy only weeks old that survived the first round of being blow-torched. Rescuers were able to save that poor soul. And, in this video the puppy was lying on a table shivering and shaking, clearly in shock with a rescuer petting his head while this baby was closing its eyes in relief.

Millions of us are asking you to help end this nightmare. We are requesting your support for House Resolution 752, introduced by Representative Alcee Hastings (D-FL). We believe it is incumbent upon the U.S., as we’re considered to be the most civilized country on earth, to intervene on behalf of all defenseless who cannot speak for themselves. These are “Man’s Best Friends”! I believe we have the responsibility as decent, humane citizens to do what is morally correct! We can NOT fail! It is not an option. I respectfully urge you to help these companion animals and show the world how great our country truly is. YOUR vote will weigh heavily in the minds of all animal lovers who are aware of this vitally important Resolution.

PLEASE STAND UP FOR MAN’S BEST FRIEND AND HELP STOP THIS TORTURE! The anguish these innocent creatures go thru is disgusting! WE CANNOT LET THIS CONTINUE. Please support House Resolution #752 to end the suffering of dogs and cats in meat-eating industry, and let’s put an end to man’s best friend being served up on a dinner table.

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Honorable Congressman ________,

I would like to ask for your support for House Resolution 752 which would help end China's cruel Yulin Dog Meat Festival, as well as the global dog and cat meat trade. We have great hopes that this Resolution will come to the House for a vote before the end of this Congressional Session.

Congressman Alcee Hastings' House Resolution 752 addresses the way that China and our country negotiate with each other in a way that would help bring about compassionate change and animal welfare reform in this region of the world. Currently the dog meat trade industry operates upon the misguided belief that the adrenaline response brought on by prolonged torture of the animals prior to slaughter gives the meat improved taste and health benefits to its consumers. Torture is performed to an estimated 10 million dogs per year in China, and is often carried out in open areas and in front of children. As you may know, there is a strong link between the mentalities of people who are willing to viciously hurt animals and of people who are willing to hurt people, and therefore torture of any creature must be deemed unacceptable.
I respectfully submit this video that was presented as evidence at the House Resolution 752 hearing Wednesday, September 14th on Capitol Hill. This short footage, which shows examples of practices within the dog and cat meat trade industry, is extremely graphic, and I sincerely apologize in advance. The intense and upsetting nature of the video is the very reason why the Yulin Festival and the global dog meat trade must be stopped. I humbly ask for your compassion and consideration when choosing whether to help the humanitarian efforts put forth by the citizens of the world.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_p71BjjCP8

Here is a short informative Public Service Announcement video regarding this trade, and it features Marc Ching, a humanitarian activist from Los Angeles who was an H.Res 752 briefing panelist, as well as many celebrities. It is mildly graphic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbwbD8JcJgY

At this moment, H.Res 752 is being reviewed by the Foreign Affairs Committee. Please consider becoming a compassionate voice for the voiceless and heroically standing up against all forms of cruelty in the world by voting in this Resolution's favor when it comes to the House of Representatives.
I thank you very much for your time, empathy, and consideration.

Dear Representative, ________,

I am calling on you to request your support for House Resolution 752 to end the Yulin dog meat eating festival and to end the dog and cat meat trade entirely in China.

As many as 10 million dogs and cats are sadistically tortured and slaughtered each year, many of which are stolen pets who are transported hundreds to thousands of miles, in cages so small they can hardly breathe, given no food or water during the trip to the slaughterhouses. Many don’t survive the trip. I believe they are the lucky ones! When they are ready for slaughter they are tortured in the most barbaric, sadistic fashion, often in front of other dogs and cats awaiting a similar fate. They are dismembered; boiled, skinned, blow torched all while conscious! They believe that the more the animal suffers the greater the benefit to their virility or to regulate their body temperature. Obviously there is no scientific evidence to support these misguided beliefs. In fact eating dog meat has been connected to outbreaks of rabies and cholera. Children who bear witness to this cruelty in the marketplaces are often traumatized or become desensitized to this gruesome activity. There are many studies that prove that there is a connection between animal abuse and crimes against humans. This is not a cultural practice as the festival dates back only to 2009 when dog meat traders wanted to help bring increased tourism to Yulin. A good many Chinese oppose this savagery and are ashamed of their own countrymen, but are powerless to stop this atrocity.

As the founder of a Facebook group, Rising Up For Furry Friends; fighting the dog and cat meat trade, and which is also affiliated with many other groups fighting for the same cause (over 250K+ growing), I speak on behalf of approximately 2,000 members in requesting your support for House Resolution 752, introduced by Representative Alcee Hastings (D-FL). We believe it is incumbent upon the U.S., as we’re considered to be the most civilized country on earth, to intervene on behalf of all defenseless, sentient beings who cannot speak for themselves. As someone eloquently stated “A nation’s greatness and its moral progress can be judged by how it treats its animals”. (Attributed to M. Gandhi). Martin Luther King, Jr. said “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter”. I believe we have a responsibility as humane, decent citizens to do what’s morally correct, to be a voice for the voiceless.

I am urging you to help these companion animals and show the world how great our country truly is. Please know that should you have Presidential aspirations, your vote will weigh heavily in the minds of all animal lovers who are aware of this vitally important Resolution.

Thank you,

25th May 2016 - HSI - Wayne Pacelle's Blog - Dog butchering raising howls in Congress and throughout the world - Rep. Alcee L. Hastings, D-Fla., introduced a congressional resolution today condemning China’s dog meat trade and the festival in Yulin, China, where thousands of dogs and cats are slaughtered each year. The resolution, which has 27 original cosponsors, doesn’t have the force of law, but it’s an opportunity for the United States to urge the government of China and Yulin authorities to protect against pet dogs being stolen and sold into the meat trade. It calls for a ban on the killing and eating of dogs and urges China to enact an anti-animal cruelty law banning the dog meat trade. It also calls for tougher enforcement of a 2011 agriculture ministry resolution that requires “one certificate for one dog” on board trucks transporting dogs that cross provincial boundaries, and of China’s food safety laws that would preclude this trade if properly enforced.....READ FULL ARTICLE
