“Eating Happiness” is the first call-to-action documentary to expose to the world the true nature of dog meat consumption in Asia. Producer and Director Genlin takes you through the back streets and rural villages of Vietnam, South Korea, and China to disclose the brutal violence of the dog meat trade, using never-before-seen footage of activists saving thousands of dogs by stopping trucks of trafficked dogs packed in cages; dog farms with horrific living conditions; a research center using dogs to develop commercial cosmetic products; an activist single-handedly raising over 3200 dogs that she saved from the Yulin Dog Meat Festival; and much more. For historical background, the movie explores the habits and relationships between humans and dogs in five different countries, providing a wide-ranged, deep study. The film’s powerful message will shake up the audience’s hearts and encourage them to reflect on humanity and the social issues we encounter.
The film highlights the fact that 30 million dogs are killed annually, 70% of them stolen pets. Dogs are tortured prior to processing, as it is believed that this enhances their flavor. It is a fallacy that dog meat is consumed because it is a cheap protein source when in fact it is more expensive than chicken, beef or pork and is considered a delicacy that enhances one’s strength. The way dogs are slaughtered compared to any other animal is the most inhumane and cruel - it is unimaginable.
We’re producing a documentary film called Compassion Soup: the End of Dog Meat in Korea to promote compassion instead of cruelty toward dogs in Korea.
About the Film
Each year over two million dogs are slaughtered by Korea’s unregulated dog meat industry often after enduring unbearable suffering. Especially during Bok-Nal through July and August, two-third of dogs are killed for Boshintang (dog meat soup). It is because many Koreans believe that Boshintang boosts their stamina and energy. That’s why it is often called a nutritious soup in Korea.
According to Thích Nhất Hạnh, the world re-known Vietnamese monk, however, what makes people healthy and happy is deeply related to what they eat. When people eat meat, in fact they are eating more than just a piece of protein but eating the fear, anger and sadness of the animal. Throughout the film we will explore what makes people’s mind and body truly healthy and happy: Boshintang or Compassion Soup?
The goal of the film is to reconnect Koreans with their compassionate true nature and inspire them to end the dog meat trade in Korea. For that, we need to build understanding, empathy and compassion in Korea and around the world.

Every day, scores of gentle dogs — including pets — are captured off the streets of Bali to supply a booming dog meat trade. The ‘lucky’ ones are shot. Others are poisoned, strangled, or clubbed to death. And unwitting tourists are eating them…
19th June 2017 Evidence shows dogs in Bali are being brutally killed and the meat sold to unsuspecting tourists....
Australian tourists are unwittingly eating dog meat in Bali. "Dog meat is essentially filtering into the tourist food chain [in Bali]," Ms White said. "They're just sitting down ordering satay having no idea that they're eating dog."
Terrified dogs caught, muzzled and put into bags. Over four months, an undercover investigator for Animals Australia infiltrated the dog trade in Bali. It is dark inside. The dogs are lying in their own urine and faeces. They whimper and strain to breathe through the tape that binds their mouths shut.
Shortly, he will bludgeon them to death with a metal pole....READ FULL STORY
